Night Trek Itinerary: K2S Trek Hour by Hour

The K2S trek is not planned in days — it is planned in hours. Everything happens between sunset and sunrise, and understanding the hour-by-hour flow helps you pace yourself through the night. Most organized groups follow a similar schedule, though the exact timing can shift by 30 to 45 minutes depending on group pace and weather.

Evening — Gather at Katraj

The standard schedule starts with a meetup at Katraj Bus Depot at 7 PM. Trekkers board a jeep or bus to the Katraj Tunnel and reach the trek start point by 8 PM. The trek begins at Waghjai Mata Mandir at around 8:30 PM.

Most organized groups start here together. The trek leader briefs everyone on the route, safety, and what to expect. Carry your torch, water, packed dinner, and warm layers. Once you leave Waghjai Mata Mandir, civilization fades fast and the Sahyadri hills take over.

Night — The 13 Hill Crossing

This is the core of the K2S trek. The trail goes up and down relentlessly through the rocky Sahyadri range. The K2S Night Trek offers stunning Pune city views, a challenging 17-hill route, and a sunrise at Sinhagad Fort steeped in Maratha history.

Around midnight most groups stop for a dinner break on one of the plateau sections. A dinner break is taken on the plateau at around 10 PM. Trekkers carry their own packed dinner as there are no food options available during the trail. The Pune city lights visible from the ridge at night are one of the most memorable sights on the entire route — a glowing sea of light spreading across the Deccan plateau below.

Early Morning — Sinhagad Sunrise

By 6 AM trekkers enjoy sunrise, photography, and exploration at the T-junction near Sinhagad Fort base. Sharing jeeps take trekkers to Sinhagad Fort base and breakfast is served at around 8 AM.

The sunrise at Sinhagad is the reward for a full night of trekking. The fort stands on a 1,300 meter high cliff and the morning views of the Sahyadri ranges stretching in all directions are genuinely spectacular. Known for its challenging terrain and rewarding sunrise vistas, the K2S trek is a favorite among trekking enthusiasts.

Sinhagad Fort: The Destination Worth Every Step

Reaching Sinhagad Fort after a full night of trekking gives the entire experience a historical and emotional weight that few other treks can match. Sinhagad — meaning “Lion’s Fort” — is one of the most historically significant forts in Maharashtra. It is where the legendary Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare gave his life during the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670 while recapturing the fort for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The fort sits at an altitude of about 1,300 meters above sea level and the views from its ramparts — especially at sunrise after a long night trek — are breathtaking. The Deccan plateau stretches far below, the Western Ghats rise to the west, and on clear mornings the distant peaks of the Sahyadri range are sharp against the early morning sky.

K2S Trek Difficulty: What to Expect

The K2S trek is a true test of willpower, stamina, and never-give-up attitude. It is one of those treks that decides whether your fascination for trekking is really your cup of tea.

The difficulty comes not from altitude but from relentless ups and downs through rocky terrain in the dark. The hiking down is slippery at least through 3 hills and so one needs good quality trekking shoes. Running or walking shoes will not be useful here.
